Marlo Furniture Gives Back To Non-Profit Community

Forestville, Md. – (April 2006) – Marlo Furniture, the largest furniture retailer in the Washington, D.C. area, recently donated $400,000 worth of furniture to AMVETS and Mission of Love Charities, Inc.

AMVETS is a non-profit organization supporting America’s veterans and active military personnel. Mission of Love Charities, Inc. is a local charity that remedies crisis and homelessness by satisfying basic human needs and offering services that provide long-term stability.

“Marlo Furniture has been in the D.C. area for more than 50 years, and we feel that it’s important to give back to the community. We’re happy to pitch in to help those in need,” said Neal Glickfield, president, Marlo Furniture.

AMVETS, a leader since 1944 in preserving the freedoms secured by America’s Armed Forces, provides not only support for veterans and the active military in procuring their earned entitlements, but also community services that enhance the quality of life for this nation’s citizens.

Mission of Love Charities, Inc., founded in 1992, attempts to close the gap between those with plenty and those in need. The Mission serves economically disadvantaged persons annually throughout Maryland, the District of Columbia and Virginia.

“This past year, we’ve established a relationship with the Glickfield family and Marlo Furniture. We’re very pleased and most appreciative of their continued support,” said Douglas Edwards, president and CEO, Mission of Love Charities, Inc.

Marlo Furniture, a strong believer in the value of giving-back, donates in-kind gifts each year to many charities. Some other recipients have included: American Heart Association, Hooray for Hospice, St. Luke House, Capital Area Food Bank, Aspenic Christian Church, the Salvation Army, Behind the Blind and Hebrew Homes of Greater Washington.

Marlo Furniture has been a strong presence in the D.C. market for over fifty years. The first store opened in 1955. Now there are four: Forestville, Laurel, Rockville and Alexandria. A fifth store will open in Chantilly, Va., and a large distribution and clearance center is slated for Bowie, Md.

Lou Glickfield founded Marlo Furniture. He named his chain of stores by combining the first name of his wife, Marilyn, with his name Lou, hence MAR-LO. The chain has won numerous awards for its showrooms, merchandise and Glickfield’s business savvy.

Marlo Furniture Charitable Foundation. Louis and Marilyn Glickfield, founders of Marlo Furniture, Maryland and Virginia’s area’s largest and one of America’s top 70 furniture retailers, formed the Glickfield Family Foundation over 30 years ago as a means of sharing the fruits of their success with the community. Today it serves as a vehicle for their community service and philanthropic activities, providing worthy charities and organizations with hundreds of thousands of dollars of contributions over the years. Louis Glickfield is the recipient of the National Humanitarian Award, and Lou and Marilyn together have been honored with the National Award As Man & Woman Of The Year, presented by the Anti-Defamation League.

Marlo Furniture: Landmark and Tradition

I am feeling a little bit nostalgic about Washington since I am new to Berlin. I base all of my movements around Berlin on landmarks. Currently, my major Berlin landmark is the Berlin Hauptbahnhof, for example. Marlo Furniture is for sure a landmark.  When I wrote Marlo Furniture Has Been a Washington Tradition for More than 50-Years I had been thinking about Marlo Furnitures place in time and hadn’t considered its time in place. What I mean to say is that Marlo Furniture is the anchor for many other stores. For example, Creative Clay advises, ” We are located just off the Edsall Road exit of 395, near Marlo Furniture.” People all over Washington give directions based on where it exists in relationship not only to the current superstores but also to where it was born down on 7th street, NW. One person even gave directions to a grave site based on where a Marlo Furniture stands in Rockville, “We have the grave and (true)monument to F Scott Fitzgerald in the cemetary across from Marlo Furniture in Rockville.” Yes, F. Scott Fitzgerald! Either way, I think a lot can be said about a store that has waited out everyone else. From the 50s through to the 21st century! In 1955, the Marlo Furniture Company, then operating under the name Ali Baba, started a small family-operated used furniture business. In 1963, the family bought its first major showroom location at 7th and I Streets, N.W. in Washington, D.C., and adopted the name Marlo, a name created from both owners names: “Marilyn” and “Lou.” This location provided the much needed room for Marlo Furniture’s expanding business into new home furnishings for every taste.
